Athletic meeting set at Coal City
Coal City High School will conduct an athletic parent meeting for any student playing a sport in the 2013-14 school year at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium.

Watseka to hold Fall Preview Night
The Watseka Athletic Booster Club will host its annual pork burger and scrimmage night on Friday, Aug. 23.

The event will begin with volleyball team introductions and scrimmages at 5 p.m.; soccer introductions and scrimmages, along with tennis scrimmages at 5:15 p.m.; golf and tennis teams along with the cheerleaders introduced at 5:55 p.m. and football introductions and scrimmages beginning at 6 p.m. with the freshmen and concluding with the junior varsity/varsity scrimmage at 6:45 p.m.

Little League Baseball
Jackie Robinson West unbeaten in regional play
Jackie Robinson West might have caused a local team heartache, but the Little League team from Chicago is doing the state of Illinois proud.

Jackie Robinson West, which defeated Bradley-Bourbonnais American twice for the state crown last week, finished 4-0 in pool play at the Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Indianapolis, earning a spot in the regional semifinals.

The bats have been the story for Jackie Robinson West, which defeated West Side (Ohio) 5-4, Knox County (Ky.) 11-0, Burlington (Wisc.) 15-5 and Hagerstown (Ind.) 16-2.

Jackie Robinson West is the top seed of the four that advanced to the semifinals and will face fourth-seeded Wisconsin at 6 p.m. Thursday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

The first semifinal pits second-seeded Michigan against third-seeded Ohio at 1 p.m. on ESPN.

Wilmington's Roark has successful debut

Wilmington native Tanner Roark made his Major League Baseball debut in fine fashion, throwing two scoreless frames for Washington in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta.

Relieving Nationals starter Jordan Zimmerman in the fifth inning, Roark needed just nine pitchers to retire Brian McCann (fly out), Chris Johnson (ground ball to short) and Dan Uggla (grounder to second).

Roark gave up a leadoff single to start the sixth inning to B.J. Upton before sawing off Andrelton Simmon's bat to force a pop out for the first out of the inning. Braves pitcher Kris Medlen attempted to sacrifice on his at bat, but popped up the bunt attempt. Roark made a diving catch on the bunt attempt and then flipped the ball to Adam LaRoche to complete the double play as Upton was running on the bunt attempt.

Roark was pinch hit for by Roger Bernadina in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
