Surprises abound at Balmoral

The last of this season's Hanover open-company stakes produced surprises in both $29,600 divisions of the 2-year-old filly paces Saturday at Balmoral Park.

Marzy Bearzy ($12.20) rallied with driver Casey Leonard to capture the first division with a one-minute, 54 3/5- seconds mile. The 5-1 fourth choice in the seven-horse field is trained by Beecher's Nelson Willis and owned by Marty Engel, of Buffalo Grove.

Driver John De Long found racing room on the inside with 19-1 longshot Delco Voracious ($40.20) and the home-bred filly powered through and drew off to a 1:53 and 3/5 win in the second filly division, finishing almost three lengths ahead for Wisconsin owner and trainer Jesse De Long

Western Dame got her nose in front of the even-money favorite Thesleazyprincess for second place.

Co-favorite Blooming Genius ($7.60) had to battle much of the way in the $46,100 Hanover for freshman pacing colts and still held off the late-charging pre-stake choice PQ Three by one length in 1:54.
